DTF Heat Press Instructions
Please Note: Every DTF vendor uses different film, ink, and powder, so pressing instructions vary from vendor to vendor. These settings are specific to PrintPony transfers. We are not responsible for issues caused by not following these instructions, and we cannot replace transfers damaged by pressing at too high a temperature or for too long. If you’re unsure about your setup, test on a scrap garment first or contact us before pressing.
Every heat press varies in temperature and pressure, so it may take a few tries to dial in your settings. If you’re new to DTF transfers or trying a new press, we recommend ordering a few extras or adding them to a gang sheet.
Pressing Instructions:
1. Pre-Press: Before applying the transfer, press your garment for 5 seconds to remove any moisture or wrinkles. (We also recommend lint rolling your garment to remove any stray lint or fuzz.)
2. First Press: After positioning the transfer in place (design facing up) on your garment, press at 300°F for 8–10 seconds using medium to firm pressure. Avoid any pockets, seams, buttons, zippers, etc. to ensure firm and even pressure.
For 100% polyester or heat-sensitive fabrics, lower the temperature slightly (250°–280°F) and press for 3–8 seconds.
3. Peeling: Peel the transfer while hot or cold. For polyester or heat-sensitive fabrics, allow the garment to cool for about 5–10 seconds before peeling.
4. Final Press: Using a finishing sheet to cover the design, press again at the same temperature for at least 5 seconds to fully bond the ink. Use a Teflon sheet for a shiny look, a silicone sheet for a textured look, or parchment paper for a matte look. For 100% polyester, press for 3 seconds.
Tips:
If you have trouble and notice the transfer is not sticking to the fabric, you may need to increase pressure and press it again. You can press multiple times, just allow the fabric time to cool in between presses. Do not go over 300°F.
If you operate a hover press or a heated bottom platen, begin with a lower temperature.
Specialty Fabrics:
Polypropylene, neoprene, nylon, water-resistant, waterproof: Press at 265–290°F for 8 seconds using light pressure. Cold peel, then final press for 3 seconds.
Some tri-blends and CVC: 290°F or lower for 8 seconds with light to medium pressure, then a 3-second final press.
For delicate or synthetic textiles, it is a balance of time and temperature. The lower temps help prevent "boxing" around the print or dye migration that can happen with certain fabrics. Not all fabrics hot peel with hot-peel film. If the film "bites" on the initial pull, cold or warm peel it.
As always, test your fabrics and make changes to fit your needs.
Washing & Drying Your Transfers:
To keep your design looking its best, wait at least 24 hours before the first wash.
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
- Tumble dry low or hang dry.
- Do not iron directly on the design. If needed, iron inside out or use a cover sheet.
- Do not dry clean.
